Running is a Gift

"Every run is a conversation with yourself, an opportunity to ask: How far can I go? How much can I endure? Who am I when things get tough? You do not need a medal or a podium to be a runner.
You just need a willingness to face yourself, to challenge your limits, and to keep moving forward. Because every km reveals a little more of who you truly are."
Running is a Gift
Hi, I’m David Woods.
This year, I’m taking on a series of running events across Australia—not just for the challenge, but to raise funds for two causes close to my heart.

Why I'm Running
Running has become an incredible gift in my life—one I never expected. It challenges me, strengthens me, and brings me immense joy. This year, I’ve committed to a series of running events across South Australia, not for personal accolades, but to make a difference.

Running for a Greater Purpose
I’m proud to be fundraising for two causes that mean the world to me:
-
Animal Welfare League (AWL) — rescuing and rehoming lost and abandoned animals.
-
Bailey Minchington Running Scholarships — providing access and opportunity to young runners, honouring Bailey’s legacy.

Honouring Bailey
Although I didn’t know Bailey Minchington personally, his courage and honesty while living with bipolar disorder inspired me deeply. His fundraising efforts and openness gave me strength during my own journey. I carry his legacy with me as I run, and I hope to help expand that legacy even further.

Why AWL?
In October 2023, I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer. Through the grief, my greatest comfort came from two places: my mother and my loyal dog, Angus. The love of a pet is healing beyond words. That's why I run for AWL—to help every animal find a second chance, and the love they deserve.

Living with Ataxia
I live with Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCA3), a rare neurological condition that affects movement and coordination. It brings daily challenges—but I refuse to let it define me. Exercise is my medicine. Running helps me stay ahead of my condition, both physically and mentally.

This is Bigger Than Me
Every step I run is a testament to resilience, legacy, and purpose. Whether it’s 5km or 21km, I run to remind myself—and others—that we all have the power to make a difference.

How You Can Help
Every donation supports:

ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE
The unconditional love of a pet is a very special bond. That’s why I’m raising money to help give every lost and abandoned pet a second chance at a happy home. Please support my fundraiser, and help me change the lives of animals in need. With your support, I can help provide food, warmth, enrichment, vet care and love for the hundreds of animals that arrive at AWL each week. The money I raise will give vulnerable animals a bright future full of hope! Thank you for your support!
$37 Will go towards shelter care for a dog or cat in need.
$60 Could help to microchip and provide parasite treatment for a dog or cat.
$95 Can vaccinate a dog or cat waiting to be adopted.

The Bailey Minchington Running Scholarships honor Bailey’s passion for running, his generosity, and his unwavering resilience. Created in his memory, these scholarships provide young runners (ages 14-25) with access to coaching, running gear, event entry fees, and travel expenses—helping them pursue their goals while promoting the powerful connection between physical activity and mental well-being.
Join us in continuing Bailey’s legacy and empowering the next generation of runners.
Together, we can ensure his spirit of kindness, strength, and generosity continues to inspire future generations and keep Bailey's memory alive.
